About this project

pre-album photo shoot at Toko Mouth

I’ve been writing songs for a while now, and this will be (with your help) my 3rd solo studio album. You can hear the other two here and here.

I’ve been working as the minister of St Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Katikati for the last 3 and a bit years. But my wife and I have felt increasingly unsettled and have decided to chase making a life out of and around music. That’s why the album has the working title, ’Into the deep’ - because it feels like we’re leaving the shallows where we feel safe and in control, and are venturing into the wildness beyond the breakers. I’m actually terrified of the sea, so its a powerful metaphor for me!

A line in the song goes, ’Lead us from the certain into your mystery...’ That’s feels about right for where we are. You can listen to here while you read the rest of this.

We have enough funds and favours to record the album, but after that we need some help. I want to get one of New Zealand’s top engineers involved to give these songs the treatment they deserve. The mixing and mastering process is what decides if an album will stick around on your ’My top rated’ playlist in iTunes, or quickly disappears altogether. It is a mysterious and complex art, well beyond me and most mortals, but when its done well, it can make you feel as well as hear the song - and that’s what this album needs.

The songs on this album have grown out of real life leading a congregation of ’not-quite’ saints. We find ourselves caught in the in-between, called into a life of fullness and abundance, but caught in habits and mindsets of scarcity and fear. These songs work the ground between our reality of insecurity and God’s reality of grace. The world (and the Church) needs to hear them - can you help?

We knocked the bugger off

Wow guys - its done.

I have loved every moment of this journey, the crazy tension between soaring elation and gnawing doubt (yes we're 87% funded but what if no one else gives anything?!)

We started recording today, tracking acoustic guitars out in a wonderful spot in Clevedon. It was lovely to get a text mid morning saying that we'd reach our target. Then when I got home we'd left it behind.

A special thanks to those who got in early - you really gave this whole thing momentum. In some ways, 50 people is not that many, which makes the fact that we've raised over 4 grand all the more impressive. Thanks for your generosity, your belief and your excitement as we have climbed and climbed.

Tha campaign will stay open for the month - but I'm in the studio for the next 2 weeks, so might not be pushing it QUITE so much in the next wee while ;)

My heart is feeling very full right now - and that has less to do with you money, and more to do with what it stands for.

Grace and peace, Malcs

Ok, so we're 3 and a half days in, and 83% funded. This is astounding - and that's not just hyped PR speak. I am constantly running through the house telling Ness (my wife) 'we just got another $30!' - or, one of my favourites, 'It's gone up by nearly a grand overnight!'

More than the money, this campaign has told me that people (ie you guys) actually want me to be making music. In some ways, 4 grand isn't that big a deal - but 4 grand in a few days is pretty huge to me right now.

It looks like this will mean we can get Nic Manders to mix the album, and maybe even get someone flash to master it. Nic is a great engineer who has worked on lots of big names in NZ music. This will mean our album has the best possible chance of sounding phenomenal - and that's thanks to you guys.

If you haven't (but I have a feeling you have) tell you mates to get on board. The campaign is going to run for a full month anyway. I'm assuming it'll slow down once we reach the mark - otherwise, I might buy some land in Queenstown or something ;)

Ok - in order to keep my feet on the ground, I'm off to shovel a trailer load of horse manure onto my potato patch.

Grace and peace, Malcs

Wow - nearly halfway!

Barely 3 days in and we've nearly reached the halfway point! Thanks to those of you who have stumped up so far, there's not that many of you but you sure pack a punch ;)

I'm off to Hamilton tonight for a wee warm up gig with Jon E Clist - feeling the excitement build for a really challenging session in the studio - but I reckon these are some of the best songs I've ever written, so I'm keen to get them sounding sweet (and honest and compelling and profound and moving...)

Thanks again guys! Get on board if you haven't yet. Rewards start at $5.

Grace and peace, Malcs
